We like to compare jewelry to treasures, so you need to take care of it once you have it in your possession.

Cleaning silver may seem like a chore, but with our tips, you'll see that it's quicker and easier than you thought. Refer to this guide regularly for the care of your silver jewelry.

How to clean silver earrings?

My silver jewelry has turned black, what should I do? We will guide you on how to maintain them properly.

Clean your silver earrings with water.

Sometimes, the most common elements are the simplest way to maintain our everyday objects. First, use water and neutral soap.

Expert tip: use a natural bristle brush to help you clean them.

Water cleaning is the simplest way to clean your silver jewelry. Take a few minutes in the shower to give them a little bath with water and soap.

Dry them gently, without rubbing, and store them in your jewelry box, but remember not to leave them in the bathroom, as humidity would blacken them.

Chamois leather, the quick tip for regular jewelry maintenance

This is another simple and useful process for taking care of your jewelry. Before putting them away in your jewelry box, gently wipe them with a chamois leather. If you do this regularly, they will keep much better.

Don't panic if the chamois leather turns black, it's just dust and other debris that accumulates on your jewelry. And despite this, the chamois remains effective for a long time.

Coca-Cola: a product used by some jewelers

Coca-Cola has much wider uses than we imagine. Cleaning silver jewelry is one of them. Many jewelers claim that it is a product they use daily in their workshops.

The recommended process is similar to the method we specified previously; you need to let your jewelry rest in a container with Coca-Cola for about 1 hour. It is recommended to check if its appearance improves every 30 minutes and remove it when you see it shine again.

Once removed, rinse your jewelry with plenty of water to remove any remaining product. Then, dry them gently with paper towel or a cloth.

Dishwashing liquid, a product everyone has at home.

Dishwashing liquid is another product often used to clean jewelry.

Why use a detergent? Silver jewelry can blacken especially due to the sebum on our skin or cosmetic products (such as creams) if we have not been careful when applying them. This dirt gradually accumulates on the jewelry, altering its appearance.

The recommended process is also similar to the previous ones, but this time we will apply a drop of detergent, normal or anti-grease. Many jewelry workshops use hand dishwashing liquid.

In a container, you will need to pour warm water, place the jewelry you want to clean, and pour a few drops of this detergent, stirring to dissolve it.

Leave the jewelry in the container for about 30 minutes and check its appearance.

You can gently scrub with a natural bristle brush if the dirt is very localized.

At the end of the process, rinse the jewelry with water and dry it gently.

Cleaning silver jewelry with baking soda.

More precisely, with hot water, baking soda, salt, and aluminum foil.

Baking soda is a descaling product and a good bacteria remover that also neutralizes odors. When you leave your jewelry immersed in this product and in warm water with salt, the dirt gradually detaches from the jewelry, and it regains its natural color and shine. That's why it is a highly recommended product for cleaning silver.

This cleaning process takes a little longer than the previous two. We recommend doing it when you have earrings that have blackened a lot, due to misuse or the passage of time.

To start, you will need to prepare a bowl, aluminum foil, salt and baking soda, and follow these steps:

  • Heat the water.
  • Place the aluminum foil in the bowl, with the matte side facing you.
  • Pour some of the heated water into the bowl.
  • Put the silver jewelry you want to clean in the bowl. If they are very deteriorated, it is best to do one at a time.
  • Sprinkle a pinch of baking soda on the soaked jewelry.
  • Also add a pinch of salt to the bowl.

And wait… You can check if they regain their natural color. Depending on the condition of the jewelry, it can take 1 hour or 1 day.

Important: never use this method on gold-plated jewelry, as you could remove the gold plating. To clean your gold-plated jewelry, it is best to simply wipe it with a cotton cloth, as even cleaning cloths for silver jewelry can damage the gold plating.

How to care for silver jewelry so it doesn't tarnish?

After seeing how to clean silver, we would like to give you some tips on how to care for your silver jewelry. If you apply them, you won't have to worry about your jewelry losing its shine.

Avoid contact with creams, perfumes or other cosmetic products, to keep them clean longer.

Store your jewelry in a separate jewelry box. Do not mix them.

Do not wear them to the gym: sweat and our own pH will darken them. If you cannot avoid it, systematically wash them with soap and water before storing them in the jewelry box.

Avoid chlorine. While occasional swims in the sea will not do much damage to your jewelry, a single swim in a swimming pool can do a lot of damage.

Silver is a beautiful and precious metal, but it is also delicate. If you want your silver jewelry to retain its full value, follow these simple tips to care for it. By keeping your silver jewelry clean and free of tarnish, you will be able to wear it with pleasure for years to come.
